From ghost fishing nets to regenerated yarn, to your very own luxury intimates.
The brand Waihetian is our ethical contribution to a more sustainable fashion future. We have taken post-consumer plastic waste, that was once polluting our ocean, and with our partners, brought to market a range of stylish eco swim and lingerie essentials. Designed and handmade in small batches, by ocean loving wāhine.
Our garments are all made sustainably thanks to econyl, a recycled nylon that takes materials such as fishing nets and plastic bottles, once polluting the world’s oceans, and transforms them into fabric. Enabling us to give you an environmentally responsible luxury garment.
All our packaging is plastic-free, our intimates come in keepsake cotton dust bags, where possible we have ironed on labels, compostable shipping mailers, and reduced the tags and packaging that always ends up going straight in the bin.
All our intimates are made in Indonesia through our eco-friendly clothing manufactures. Employees are paid well over fair trade salaries, with medical cover for employees whole family, healthy cooked meals daily, and government awarded working conditions covering treatment of employees, waste disposal and sanitation. Our manufactures only produce clothing using ethical practices including regenerated and organic fabrics, organic dyes, bio-degradable packaging, ensuring zero water pollution. As well as donating all left-over fabric to a local charities, such as Bali Street Mums, who take off cuts and create new products to sell empowering self-employment and women run businesses.
All our fabrics are supplied from Italy from GRS (Global Recycle Standard) certified manufacturers Carvico and recycling plant Aquafil, who take recovered ghost fishing nets and gear cleaned out of the ocean by Healthy Seas and volunteer divers from organisation Ghost Diving, along with other post-consumer plastics and make into ECONYL® an 100% recycled and regenerated nylon.
The ECONYL® Regeneration System starts with rescuing waste otherwise polluting the Earth’s oceans, like fishing nets & gear, fabric scraps, carpet flooring and industrial plastic all over the world. That waste is then sorted and cleaned to recover all of the nylon possible.
Through a radical regeneration and purification process, the nylon waste is recycled right back to its original purity. That means ECONYL® regenerated nylon is exactly the same as virgin nylon.
ECONYL® regenerated nylon is processed into textile yarn for the fashion and interior industries.
Carvico and Jersey Lomellina take the ECONYL® regenerated yarn and knit into nylon fabrics, dyed with plant-based OEKO-TEX 100 certified (no harmful chemicals that lead to water pollution). Waihetian use this regenerated fabric & trimmings to create brand new intimates for you. This nylon has the potential to be recycled infinitely, without ever losing its quality. Using ECONYL® reduces the global warming impact of nylon by up to 90% compared with the material from oil, all while cleaning up our ocean at the same time.
